- 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp baking soda
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- ½ tsp ground nutmeg
- ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup buttermilk (or 1 cup milk + 1 tbsp lemon juice, let sit 5 mins)
- ¼ cup granulated sugar (for topping)
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon (for topping)
- 2 tbsp melted butter (for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a 9×5-inch loaf pan with parchment paper.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy (about 2 minutes). Add in eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla.
- Alternate adding the dry mixture and the buttermilk into the wet mixture, starting and ending with dry, until just combined. (Don’t overmix.)
- Pour batter into prepared loaf pan. Bake for 50–60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
- While the bread is still slightly warm, brush the top with melted butter. Mix sugar + cinnamon together in a small bowl, then sprinkle generously over the bread.
Notes
- Add ½ cup chopped nuts (pecans or walnuts) for crunch.
- Swirl cinnamon sugar inside the batter for a marbled effect.
- Serve warm with coffee or tea for the ultimate cozy treat.
