Ingredients

  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg
  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or 1 cup milk + 1 tbsp lemon juice, let sit 5 mins)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar (for topping)
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon (for topping)
  • 2 tbsp melted butter (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a 9×5-inch loaf pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  3. In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy (about 2 minutes). Add in eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla.
  4. Alternate adding the dry mixture and the buttermilk into the wet mixture, starting and ending with dry, until just combined. (Don’t overmix.)
  5. Pour batter into prepared loaf pan. Bake for 50–60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
  7. While the bread is still slightly warm, brush the top with melted butter. Mix sugar + cinnamon together in a small bowl, then sprinkle generously over the bread.

Notes

  • Add ½ cup chopped nuts (pecans or walnuts) for crunch.
  • Swirl cinnamon sugar inside the batter for a marbled effect.
