Description

The Original Joe Sandwich is a delicious layered sandwich featuring a mix of deli meats, Swiss cheese, and a tangy coleslaw, all brought together with a flavorful Russian dressing.

Ingredients

Scale
  • Thin-sliced rye bread, 3 slices per sandwich (crusts removed)
  • Assorted deli meats: turkey, roast beef, corned beef (or mix of your favorites)
  • Swiss cheese slices
  • Coleslaw:
    • 2 cups shredded cabbage & carrots mix
    • 3 tbsp mayonnaise
    • 1 tbsp sour cream
    • ½ tbsp apple cider vinegar
    • ½ tsp sugar
    • Pinch of salt & pepper
  • Russian Dressing:
    • ½ cup mayonnaise
    • 2 tbsp sweet pickle relish
    • 1 tbsp ketchup
    • 1 tsp prepared horseradish
    • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
    • Salt & pepper to taste
  • Butter, for spreading on rye
  • Optional: pickle slices for garnish

Instructions

  1. Make the coleslaw: In a bowl, mix mayo, sour cream, vinegar, sugar, salt & pepper. Add shredded cabbage & carrots; toss to coat. Chill while assembling.
  2. Make the Russian dressing: Whisk together mayo, relish, ketchup, horseradish, Worcestershire, salt & pepper.
  3. Prepare bread & layers: Remove crusts from rye bread slices. Lightly butter the outsides of each slice to prevent sogginess.
  4. Assemble the sandwich: Start with one slice of rye. Layer deli meat, a portion of coleslaw, a spread of Russian dressing, and Swiss cheese. Top with a second slice of bread. Then repeat: meats, slaw, dressing, cheese. Finish with the final slice of rye.
  5. Slice & serve: Press gently and cut into halves or thirds (diagonally or square). Add pickle slices if desired. Serve cold or at room temperature.

Notes

  • Some delis brine their coleslaw for days to reduce moisture and intensify flavor.
  • Use very thin slices of bread to match the traditional delicate layers.
  • To avoid sogginess, spread dressing and slaw sparingly.
  • You can omit one layer (meat/slaw/dressing) for a lighter version.
